Aquaculture and fish feed
A balanced nutrition feed for fish is as necessary as a good nutritional food for human body to stay healthy. It is even more important to get a perfect nutritionally balanced fish feed as they are going to be consumed by us and healthier the fish healthier its going to produce the meal for us. Because of developments in aquaculture and globalisation, aqua farmers are able to get variety of fish feeds nowadays. However, quantity and type of fish varier from species to species and people indulge in fish farming must be aware about that. Some of the species of fish that are cultured commonly in Indian subcontinent are Kalanchi, Catla, Rohu, Roopchand, Pangasius and Tilapila. And two of the major fish feeds are used in aquaculture are floating fish feed and sinking fish feed. Types of fish feeds As the name suggests floating fish feeds floats on the water and a fish have to float up to the surface of water to get the feed. This feed also help farmers to monitor the growth of fish every day when fishes get to the surface of water. Floating fish feeds are normally expensive than sinking fish feeds. Many fish farmers choose sinking fish feeds just because of its low cost as the mineral mixture and nutritional values are same as the floating fish feeds. This fish feed settles down on the bottom after few hours. However, this fish feed has always been economical for farmers. There are certain things that a fish farmer must consider while choosing a fish feed. They must check out the feed ingredients, its water stability, mineral mixture, nutritional values, its manufacturer, if it improves the survival of larvae or not, if its easy to digest and most importantly if it is coming at the right price. Considerations while feeding fish feeds Never over feed, it is important to feed exact required amount of feed. Never put feed in just one place but spread it all around water. Keeping water quality good is also important as poor-quality water promotes reduction in the size of fish and quantity of feed they require too. Fish feed must be given 2 times a day and at the same time schedule must be followed. You must know about the number of fishes and the species of fish you have in your pond before feeding them. And lately, fresh fish feed must be purchased on regular basis and must not be stored for long.

Brine shrimps and artemia are best known as fry food but you would be amazed to know that they can also be grown to about 1 inch length and can fulfil a great purpose for a source of food for adult fishes too.
The nutritional values of brine shrimp are what makes it best for fry food. Another amazing fact about them is the capability of them to live up to 5 hours in fresh water. Moreover, they can also be stored for years as long as they are kept away from water. They resume their development and hatching process once the dry eggs come in contact with oxygenated saltwater. The time the eggs need to hatch however depends on the temperature of water. After the hatching process the next stage of their development is umbrella stage and the larvae survive on yolk sac at this stage and not feed anything else. Next stage of development comes after 12 hours when they start feeding by micro algae. The adulthood comes in 8 days and they easily can survive up to 90 days. Taking Care of Brine Shrimp The two major factors responsible for a successful raising brine shrimp to their adulthood size are: Artemia cysts or shrimp hatchery feeds Just like any other shrimp brine shrimps are also very easy to feed. Just like others they filter their food out of water as long as the feed is water dissolvent. You can either choose some cheaper feeding option like egg yolk or you can just by some shrimp broodstock feeds at your nearby pet store. Surroundings By saying surroundings means maintaining right conditions in the aquarium. To keep the water quality good must be your priority. Changing 20 percent of water weekly can keep the required oxygen levels of water. Brine shrimp female can produce up to 300 nauplii in every 4 days if shrimp hatchery feeds and good water conditions are maintained. |
